Robert Downey Jr has revealed the alternative lines he had in place for Iron Man's big moment in Avengers: Endgame.
The record-breaking 2019 Marvel blockbuster ended with Tony Stark's noble sacrifice after stealing the Infinity Stones from Thanos and snapping him out of existence.
However, the scene was elevated by the superhero's riposte to the villain's line "I am inevitable," – Stark replied with a triumphant "And I am Iron Man".

While we already knew that the line was a last-minute addition to the movie, Downey Jr has elaborated a bit on some other quips he thought of… one a little more sweary.
"I had so many so many alt lines that I wanted to put forward," he told the HypochondriActor podcast. "They were all super smart-ass lines like I was trying, you know, say stuff like 'you are so f**ked' or whatever… I was going to say 'oh snap!'…
"I tell you what, it was too smartass and it was the whole arc of the character, and it was I think maybe one of our great editor's ideas or one of the writers who say that we need to go back to the first film and have him his dying words to be the words of his origin," the star added. "We love a bookend."

The Russo brothers, who directed the film, spoke back in 2019 about bringing in the line, telling SlashFilm: "Tony used to not say anything in that moment.
"And we were in the editing room going, 'He has to say something. This is a character who has lived and died by quips.' And we just couldn't, we tried a million different last lines. Thanos was saying 'I am inevitable.'
"And our editor Jeff Ford, who's been with us all four movies and is an amazing storyteller, said 'Why don't we just go full circle with it and say I am Iron Man?' And we're like, 'Get the cameras! We have to shoot this tomorrow.'"

Endgame, which helped to draw Marvel's Phase Three to a close, became a huge hit when it was released three years ago, temporarily becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time.
Studio boss Kevin Feige recently called it the "final" Avengers movie, though was likely speaking in the context of the Infinity Saga.
Avengers: Endgame is out now on DVD, Blu-ray, 3D, 4K and digital download, and is available on Disney+.
