Reading: Who Is Stronger Than Iron Man

Iron Man has a rich legacy in the Marvel Universe. He's been one of the premiere heroes for nearly his entire time in the armor and has battled some of the greatest threats. A founding Avenger, Iron Man has seen and done things that many heroes haven't, surviving some of the greatest superhero wars imaginable. While his armor is iconic, his greatest weapon in these battles is his intellect. It's allowed him to figure out ways to defeat nearly every foe he's ever gone up against, using his weapons and resources in unexpected ways.

As formidable as Iron Man can be, there are heroes and villains who the Armored Avenger just can't beat. He's tried his best, but some foes have proven to be too much even for him.

8 The Beyonder's Power Was Too Much For Iron Man

The Beyonder is one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe. The first time the heroes encountered him was in the first Secret Wars. He pitted them against a group of villains but never really interacted with them much. Only Doctor Doom was able to beat the Beyonder at this point, taking his power and forcing the heroes to deal with an omnipotent Doom.

In Secret Wars II, the Beyonder took on human form and came to Earth. He smacked around the heroes at every turn, with only ultra-powerful beings like Molecule Man or Rachel Summers being able to hold a candle to him. Iron Man was one of many heroes that Beyonder easily beat, and in future encounters, Iron Man would still never be able to win against him.

7 Hydra Cap Beat Everyone Except The Real Captain America

Secret Empire is one of Marvel's worst events of recent years. While Iron Man was in a coma for most of it, he was alive in a holographic form and joined the resistance against Hydra Captain America after the former hero took over the US. Hydra Cap had all of the tactical know-how of Captain America, so he was able to out-plan and outfight the Avengers and Iron Man at every turn.

Iron Man wasn't a huge factor in the battle against Hydra Cap. He did pilot a suit of Iron Man armor, but he could never beat the dictator. Hydra Cap's plans pretty much went exactly as he wanted them to. The heroes lost to him at every turn, and Iron Man, who has beaten Captain America in the past, couldn't defeat the Hydra version.

6 The Sentry/The Void Always Beat On Iron Man

The Sentry is one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe. He's also one of its greatest enemies, as his dark side, the Void, has attacked the heroes many times. Iron Man has battled both the Sentry and the Void several times, and every time he's been rather ineffectual. The Sentry's powers put him beyond even the toughest heroes, and the Void has all the same abilities with none of the morality.

Iron Man has a healthy fear of the Sentry and the Void. He's fallen victim to both, and he knows that nothing he's ever done has been able to affect either. For a person like Iron Man, that's the worst feeling in the world.

5 The Hulk Rips Through Everything Iron Man Throws At Him

The Hulk is the strongest there is and one of the most devastating opponents to have to fight. Over the years, the Hulk has gone on a rampage and battled the heroes many times. Iron Man has been in a lot of those fights and built the Hulkbuster armor to help him in battle against the Jade Giant. Unfortunately for Iron Man, the Hulkbuster armor has never made a lick of difference in his conflicts with the Hulk.

Iron Man has access to the best resources, but even he can't build anything that can withstand the Hulk's fury. Hulk can lift a hundred tons and only he gets stronger as a fight goes on. As great an engineer as Iron Man is, he just doesn't have the technology to defeat this all-powerful rage monster.

4 The Skrull Queen Veranke Outmaneuvered Iron Man And Everyone Else At Every Turn

Secret Invasion had some of the best build-ups of any Marvel event. The Skrull Queen Veranke posed as Spider-Woman and joined the New Avengers, working from the inside to set up all the pieces her people would need to beat the heroes of the Earth. After Tony Stark was given control of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Superhero Initiative, Vernake used the mistrust between the heroes and the foothold she had in S.H.I.E.L.D. to set up the last pieces she needed to beat Iron Man.

Iron Man isn't dumb, but Veranke played him like he was a rube. While their battle was more one of wills and one that Iron Man didn't know he was fighting the whole time, Veranke held all the cards. She humiliated Iron Man to such an extent that he was deposed from his positions of power after the battle against the Skrulls.

3 The Phoenix Five Caused Iron Man To Question Himself

Avengers Vs. X-Men saw some Iron Man get knocked around rather badly. The Phoenix Five gaining their powers was his fault; the Phoenixbuster armor he built split the Phoenix Force into five parts, allowing it to bond with Cyclops, Emma Frost, Namor, Magik, and Colossus. At first, the Phoenix Five used their powers for good, although they still wanted the Avengers captured. However, things changed as their powers corrupted them.

Iron Man's technology was useless against the Phoenix Five. While the Avengers were able to keep ahead of them, it was more because of the power of Scarlet Witch, Hope Summers, and the Phoenix Five fighting amongst themselves than anything Iron Man did. Dark Phoenix Cyclops was defeated by Scarlet Witch and Hope, with Iron Man playing no role in the win.

2 Thor Is Just Too Much For Iron Man

Thor is one of the most powerful Avengers and has faced down some of the most dangerous villains around. Thor and Iron Man have mostly been friends over the years, but they have come to blows, most notably upon Thor's return after Civil War. Thor took exception to Iron Man's actions when he found out about them, especially Iron Man's use of a Thor clone, and the two came to blows.

Thor beat Iron Man easily. Iron Man was basically powerless against the God of Thunder. Thor stopped short of beating Iron Man to death, but he made sure that Iron Man knew that there was nothing he could do to Thor if Thor pressed the issue.

1 Thanos Wins But Especially Against Iron Man

Thanos is the greatest villain in the Marvel Universe, and Iron Man has been a part of the battles against him. In fact, Iron Man was among the first heroes Thanos fought, and Iron Man has never gotten a solo victory against the Mad Titan. In Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos didn't kill Iron Man himself, allowing Terraxia, the woman he created, to do the honors. She ripped Stark's head off and threw it across the battlefield.

Iron Man's armor has proven potent against many foes, but he's never created a suit of armor that has allowed him to defeat Thanos. Like many others, Iron Man is frightened of Thanos, and for good reason. He's never beaten him.
