Tag: why did iron man use the infinity gauntlet
Iron Man sacrificed his own life in Avengers: Endgame when he used his own Infinity Gauntlet to restore order in the Marvel Universe and snap Thanos out of existence. In the comics, Tony Stark's first time wielding the powerful gauntlet had a much different result, as not only did it not kill him, but he basically succeeded in his battle, while the cosmic weapon was pretended to be destroyed.
In the Avengers' final battle with Thanos on Earth in the fourth installment of the Avengers franchise, Tony successfully swiped the Infinity Stones from the Mad Titan. In one of the epic moments in pop culture history, Stark responded to Thanos' "I am inevitable" line with his own, "I am Iron Man," while snapping his fingers and destroying the MCU villain. Stark's own snap was successful but it ultimately cost him his own life – as the power from the Infinity Stones was too much for a mere human to handle. In the pages of Marvel Comics, his first time with the gauntlet went much differently.
Avengers #12 (2012) by Brian Michael Bendis, John Romita Jr. Klaus Janson, Dean White, Cory Petit, sees the villain the Hood trying to assemble the Infinity Stones (he's collected three) when he runs into the path of Thanos. After trying to convince the Hood to give him the Stones and being rejected, it's revealed Thanos is actually Doctor Strange disguised by a spell. As they shift through different realities, the Hood demands the last Stone, but is shocked to learn Iron Man has swiped the Stones (like he did in Avengers: Endgame). After contemplating what he could do with the Stones, Stark does two things: send the Hood to prison and destroy the Infinity Stones.
Being the first human to wear the Infinity Gauntlet didn't negatively impact Tony because he only used its powers sparsely, sending the Hood to the Raft. Iron Man didn't actually destroy the Infinity Stones, instead of lying to his fellow Avengers and hiding the Stones with the Illuminati team – so he didn't use the powerful cosmic gems any further.
The big difference between the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the comic's version of Iron Man's first use of the Infinity Gauntlet was it was used. MCU Tony Stark used the Infinity Stones to defeat Thanos – and it took every ounce of power he had. In the comics, Iron Man didn't test the full powers of the gauntlet, briefly using it before hiding the Infinity Stones, which prevented him from getting hurt or worse, dying. Iron Man's fate with the Infinity Gauntlet couldn't be more different in the two mediums.
